This is not a day lesson, it’s a proper weekend away. Three days with surfing at the centre of everything. You arrive Friday afternoon, surf Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon, and head home Sunday evening.

Each day is built around two or three surf sessions at some of Northland’s best breaks. The itinerary flexes with conditions, coaches decide each morning where the waves are best and take the group there. Beginners work on the basics and get into waves quickly. More experienced surfers push their technique with coaching focused on what they actually need to work on.

The video analysis sessions are a genuine highlight. Coaches film you in the water and sit down with you to go through the footage, breaking down exactly what to focus on to improve. It is the kind of feedback most surfers never get access to.

Between sessions there is paddleboarding and kayaking on the estuary, sandboarding, beach volleyball, and good company around camp. The welcome dinner on the first night is when the group comes together, by the time you paddle out Saturday morning you already know everyone.

Tours run on selected dates through the year, including long weekends and school holidays.

Do I need surfing experience?

No. Many people on the tour have never surfed before. Beginners and more experienced surfers are grouped separately so everyone works at the right level from day one.

Is this suitable for international students?

Yes. The tour is popular with both local students and international students studying in New Zealand. All instruction is in English and the environment is welcoming to everyone. Some of our coaches also speak Spanish, German, Dutch, French and Mandarin. Aotearoa Surf can provide a full set of RAMS and certifications for any school or institution on request.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. Many people join solo and leave with a group of new friends. The welcome dinner on the first night is specifically designed to bring everyone together.

Can friends request to room together?

Yes. Accommodation is arranged by gender and similar ages, and friends can request to bunk together at the time of booking.

What about dietary requirements?

The welcome dinner caters for common dietary requirements. The camp kitchen allows you to prepare your own meals across the rest of the weekend. Let us know at booking if there is anything we need to know.

Who runs the tour?

The tour is run by Aotearoa Surf, one of New Zealand’s most established surf schools, operating since 2002. Orewa Surf Lessons works in partnership with Aotearoa Surf to offer this tour to our community.

A weekend on the water with people from all over

Did the 2 night surf tour and it delivered. Three solid surf sessions in one day pushed my surfing way faster than I expected. Coaches were clear, direct, and actually helped you fix things in the water. Accommodation was clean, simple, and social. Good crew, good energy. If you want to improve quickly and have a fun weekend, this is it.

Booked this with a group of friends and it exceeded expectations. Everything was organised. Transport, gear, timing, coaching. You just show up and surf. We surfed multiple beaches depending on conditions which made a big difference. By day two we were all catching better waves and staying up longer. Would 100% do it again.

Perfect mix of progression and fun. You surf a lot. That is what makes it work. Repetition, feedback, then straight back out. The video analysis session was a game changer. You see exactly what you are doing wrong. Small group sizes meant heaps of coaching time. Felt like a proper step up in my surfing after just a weekend.

This is not just a surf trip, it is structured coaching done right. Early starts, multiple sessions, and constant feedback. Coaches know how to push you without overloading you. The whole weekend felt smooth and professional. If you are serious about getting better at surfing, book it.
