Orewa beach insights
Swell Size
The bigger the number, the bigger the waves. For beginners, 0.2-1m is ideal. Intermediates will enjoy 0.5-1.5m as it gives more wave face to work with.
Orewa tip: 0.2m is plenty for a first lesson. Don't be fooled - a 1m wave looks and feels much bigger when you are in it!
Wind Direction
Offshore wind (blowing from land to sea) grooms the waves and makes them cleaner looking and feeling. Onshore wind (from sea to land) makes them crumbly and easier to catch.
Orewa tip: The best wind for Orewa Beach is a light W or SW. A NE or E wind is onshore, but still great for learning - Orewa is quite sheltered.
Wind Speed
Less is more. Light winds under 10kph are great, whatever the direction. Strong winds make it harder to paddle, harder to stand up, and a bit messier on the water.
Orewa tip: 0-15kph is perfect. Over 25kph and conditions start to get tricky, but still fun up to 35kph.
Swell Period
This is the time in seconds between waves. A longer period means more powerful, better organised waves. Short period means a choppy, washing-machine feel with less defined waves.
Orewa tip: 8 seconds and above is good. Under 6 seconds and the surf tends to be messy. 12+ seconds means quality waves with real push. Note: swell period is not something beginners or lesson participants need to worry about.
Tide
Tide has a big effect on how waves break at many beaches. As a general rule, avoid surfing at very low tide when the water is shallow and waves can break closer to the beach. Mid to high tide is usually the best experience for beginners.
Orewa tip: Orewa has a flat, long sandy bottom and isn't affected by the tides like other beaches. You can surf here at any tide with confidence.
Swell Direction
Swell direction tells you where the waves are coming from. All beaches perform differently based on swell direction. As long as there are waves, doesnt matter what direction!
Orewa tip: NE and E swells work well for Orewa Beach. SE swells also deliver good conditions.
