2 HOUR SURF LESSON $79 pp

What's included
  • 2 hour surf lesson with a qualified, experienced instructor
  • Surfboard suited to your level
  • Wetsuit and rash vest
  • Beach and ocean safety briefing
  • In-water coaching and feedback throughout
  • Maximum 6 surfers per instructor, real attention, not just supervision

Your lesson starts on the beach. Your instructor will run through ocean awareness, safety signals and basic technique before anyone hits the water. From there it’s straight into the surf with your instructor in the water alongside you the whole time.

Each session follows a simple structure:

  • Beach briefing – safety, technique and a quick run through of what to expect
  • In-water coaching – paddling, pop up and riding waves with your instructor right there
  • Feedback and progression – your instructor adjusts based on how you’re going

If it’s your first time, you’ll work on:

  • Ocean and beach safety
  • Paddling out and positioning on the board
  • Pop up technique and riding your first waves

If you’ve surfed before:

  • Let your instructor know and they’ll push you further
  • Wave selection, turning and building confidence out the back
  • Technique refinement and real progression

For you first timers you’ll be standing and riding waves within the session. It’s one of those days you’ll be talking about for a while.

2 Hour Surf Lessons run most days, all year round.

  • Morning sessions: 11.00am
  • Afternoon sessions: 3.00pm

Available at Orewa Beach and Te Arai Beach. Orewa is great for families, kids & adults. Te Arai has a more consistent guaranteed wave and suits, kids, teens and amazing for adults.

Availability is shown at checkout – sessions fill fast on weekends and through summer, so book ahead.

  • Swimwear (to wear under your wetsuit)
  • Towel
  • Hat
  • Water bottle
  • Warm clothes for after

Everything else is taken care of – surfboard, wetsuit and rash vest all provided. If you have your own gear, bring it along and your instructor will check it suits the day’s conditions.

Your safety is our first priority, always.

  • ISA qualified surf instructors
  • First aid certified and surf rescue awarded
  • Maximum 1:6 instructor to surfer ratio
  • All sessions in supervised, waist to chest depth water
  • Orewa and Te Arai are two of Auckland’s safest beaches for learning to surf

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer. If you’re a non swimmer or not confident in the water, you’ll be in waist to chest deep water with your feet on the sand and your instructor right beside you. We build confidence from the ground up, and every session starts with a full safety briefing before anyone gets wet.

Do I need to be able to swim?

No. You’ll be in waist to chest deep water with an instructor close by the entire time. We welcome non swimmers and nervous beginners, building ocean confidence is part of what we do.

What if the weather is bad?

We run rain or shine. Some of our best sessions happen in overcast conditions. If the ocean is genuinely unsafe we’ll reschedule and let you know in advance.

I’ve had a lesson before. Will I still improve?

Absolutely. Tell your instructor what you’ve done before and what you want to work on. We’ll tailor the session from there, whether that’s catching green waves, improving your turns, or getting more consistent.

Orewa or Te Arai – which should I pick?

Orewa is a long, sheltered beach that works well for families, kids youth and most adults. Te Arai has a more consistent wave and tends to suit adult learners. Not sure? 2 Hour Surf Lessons are good at any beach. For an extra challenge go with Te Arai.

Can I bring my own board or wetsuit?

Yes. Your instructor will check it’s right for the conditions on the day, and if it’s not, we have everything you need included in the lesson price.

Do you offer lesson packages?

Yes. You can book a single lesson or save with multi-lesson packages. A great option if you want to keep progressing week to week.

Booked this as a last minute thing on a Saturday and it ended up being the highlight of our whole trip to Auckland. Instructor was brilliant - patient, funny and really good at explaining things. Both my partner and I were up on the board by the end. Already planning to come back.

Took my 8 and 11 year old for the first time. They were nervous at the start and absolutely feral with excitement by the end. The instructor had them laughing and surfing within the first 20 minutes. Genuinely one of the best things we've done as a family.

I'm not a confident swimmer so I was pretty anxious going in. The safety briefing actually calmed me right down and the instructor never left my side. Caught four waves. Four! Can't believe I did it.

Came up from Christchurch for a long weekend and this was top of my list. Small group, great beach, really well run. The instructor knew exactly when to push and when to let you figure it out yourself. Booked another lesson for next time I'm up.
